A smooth, sweet Peruvian origin-blend coffee from a series of small-scale speciality coffee farms, naturally decaffeinated using the chemical-free Swiss Water Process to preserve all the flavours, without any of the caffeine.
Origin:
Peruvian coffee has a long history, but it's the country's small farms and standout regional character that have put it firmly on the speciality map. Most of it is grown by smallholders, many working through cooperatives that put sustainable farming and community investment first.
Regions like Cajamarca, Cusco, San Martín and Junín produce cups that are smooth and bright, with flavours running from citrus and florals through to cocoa and caramel. Peru is also one of the world's biggest exporters of organic coffee, so you're getting great flavour from producers who care about the land and the people working it.
The name Marañón is an homage to the major river running through the northern Andes of where the coffee is grown, water being the connection between the origin source and the method used to decaffinate the coffee.
The Decaf process
This coffee has been decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process. It uses nothing but water, so there are no chemical solvents involved.
How it works: The green coffee is soaked in hot water, which pulls out both the caffeine and the flavour compounds. That water then runs through a carbon filter that traps only the caffeine, leaving flavour-rich water known as Green Coffee Extract (GCE).
A fresh batch of beans is then soaked in that extract. Because it's already full of flavour, nothing is drawn out of the beans except the caffeine. The sweetness, balance and character stay where they belong.
The result is a clean, naturally decaffeinated coffee that still tastes like Peru.
